The U.S. - MEXICAN WAR is the first binational program to cover this pivotal time in history from multiple viewpoints, and it represents the first time that historians and scholars from both countries have collaborated on such a project. While the war lasted only two years, its outcome not only transformed the boundaries of these neighboring countries, it shifted the balance of world powers and shaped the destinies of each nation. As a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico lost nearly half of its territory and the United States gained more than 500,000 square miles of land -- the present states of New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and California as well as parts of Oklahoma, Colorado and Wyoming. These resources have been designed to provide teachers and their students with accurate, substantive and editorially balanced materials that shed light on one of the most significant events in the history of the United States and Mexico. The resources not only examine the war but also address the complex issues that confronted the two young republics as they struggled to define themselves and their place in the world. Use the lesson plans, maps, profiles, bibliography, and primary source documents provided in this site to enhance The U.S. - MEXICAN WAR video segments.
