On January 13, 1846, with a small army of less than 4000 men, General Zachary Taylor marched from the Nueces River near Corpus Christi to the banks of the Rio Grande. Within four weeks, Mexican troops crossed the Rio Grande and engaged Taylor's men. Zachary Taylor (1784 - 1850)
