Not all trenches were long ditches with dirt on both sides. Different armies did a variety of things to improve the protection the trenches offered the soldiers and the living conditions of those who were stationed there. Both sides tried to help the men adjust to this environment. A mail call was a welcome relief from the stress and horrors of the front line trenches.
