The original 'Zimmerman Telegram' in code, dated January 18, 1917, as received first by British code breakers and later by the Americans. The telegram offered Mexico "generous financial support" and the chance to "reconquer the lost territory of Texas, New Mexico and Arizona" if Mexico would wage war against the U.S. and thus keep the U.S. from sending troops to Europe.
