Das Boot [The Boat]. Movie based on a U-boat crew in the World War II; an excellent portrayal of the thoughts and feelings of submariners in the context of serving their country and completing their missions; in German with subtitles.
Dr. Zhivago. Movie based on Pasternak's novel of the same name; provides background to the Russian Revolution and the many ways Russian society was affected by the revolution and the civil wars; excellent re-creations of the mass desertion of soldiers from the eastern front.
Gallipoli. Movie based on the Australian and New Zealand armies' engagement at Gallipoli in 1915; excellent portrayal of the thoughts and feelings of the foot soldiers during this disastrous campaign.
