The Civil War was the most terrible and destructive war in American history. Three million Americans fought in it and over 600,000 men, two percent of the population, died. What began as a bitter conflict over Union and states' rights ended as a struggle over the meaning of freedom in America. These resources have been designed to help teachers and their students engage in the issues of the Civil War. The lesson plans have been selected according to central themes and issues. We strongly recommend that you view each volume of The Civil War in its entirety. Use the maps, graphs, keywords, profiles, glossary, and primary source documents provided in this site to enhance THE CIVIL WAR video segments.
